Moraco N.V., the investment company of the Mourmans family and known for the snack brand Mora, has sold its entire stake in GaiaZOO to Brukerga B.V., part of Royal Burgers’ Zoo. This strategic acquisition brings together two leading zoos. Boels Zanders acted as legal advisor to Moraco throughout the two-phase acquisition process, in collaboration with financial advisor Kruger.
GaiaZOO, located in Kerkrade, has grown into a leading zoo with a strong focus on landscape design, education, and nature conservation. Since its opening in 2005, the park has welcomed over 8 million visitors. With a solid regional presence and a healthy financial foundation, GaiaZOO is a key tourist attraction in the southern Limburg region.
Royal Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem is internationally renowned for its eco-displays and its commitment to nature conservation. The zoo is family-run by the Van Hooff family. With the acquisition of GaiaZOO, Burgers’ Zoo reinforces its long-term vision as a family-owned enterprise and strengthens its social role in the areas of education and biodiversity.
The municipality of Kerkrade, formerly a co-owner, will remain closely involved through a seat on the Advisory Board. Burgers’ Zoo and GaiaZOO share an inspiring vision centered on animal welfare, conservation, and education—with a strong focus on future generations.
